Retail packaging that survives a container

Retail packaging that survives a container

The sample arrives perfect. The container arrives with dented corners and a printed sleeve that has gone soft. Nothing about the product changed — the packaging met a sea voyage.

Three failure modes we see every season

  • Humidity. A container crossing the equator swings between 30°C days and cold nights. Uncoated board swells, printed paper cockles, glued seams lift.
  • Stack load. Retail cartons are designed to hold the product, not to carry twenty cartons above them for six weeks.
  • Abrasion. Sleeves rubbing against each other for 10,000 km polish off whatever matte lamination looked so good in the photo.

What we change for export

Board thickness up one grade for the master carton, an inner divider so units cannot shift, and a moisture barrier bag for anything with a paper surface. Matte lamination gets a scuff additive; if the design can take it, a spot UV on the logo reads better than full coverage.

Design the retail box for the shelf, and the shipper for the ocean. They are different jobs.

Test before you print 5,000

A drop test from 80 cm on a corner, a 48-hour humidity soak at 40°C and 90% RH, and a vibration table if you have one. Most packaging suppliers will run the first two for a small fee. Finding the failure at sample stage costs a week. Finding it at retail costs the season.
